What is one lesson you hope your children or grandchildren remember? A personal legacy letter gives you a place to answer that question in your own words. You can share the story behind a family tradition, describe someone who shaped your life, or explain a value you tried to live by.<\/p>\n
You do not need to write your entire life story. Start with one paragraph about something that matters to you. A short, honest letter gives your family something personal to keep, and you can add to it whenever you are ready.<\/p>\n
A personal legacy letter is a message about your experiences, values, and hopes. It is sometimes called an ethical will. Stanford Medicine describes an ethical will as a personal record of stories and beliefs and distinguishes it from legal documents. Read Stanford Medicine’s explanation of an ethical will<\/a>.<\/p>\n Keep this letter personal and nonbinding. It should not replace a will, trust, power of attorney, or advance health care directive. Avoid using it to distribute property or change instructions in your estate planning documents. If writing brings up a planning question, put that question on a separate list so it does not become mixed into your family message.<\/p>\n Writing to everyone at once can make it difficult to begin. Picture one person reading your letter. What would you want that person to understand about you?<\/p>\n Choose a memory you can describe clearly. Perhaps it involves a first job, a family meal, a move, or someone who showed up when you needed help. The event does not have to be extraordinary. A small moment can explain why you value patience, generosity, education, or keeping a promise.<\/p>\n Include enough detail for the reader to follow the story. Name the people involved and explain their connection to you. A grandchild may not know who \u201cAunt Rosa\u201d was or why a certain place mattered. A sentence of context can preserve the meaning along with the memory.<\/p>\n After describing the memory, say why you chose it. What changed in your thinking? What did you learn that you still carry with you?<\/p>\n You can use one of these prompts to get started:<\/p>\n Pick the prompt that brings a real story to mind. You do not need to answer all five. Write what you actually believe rather than what sounds impressive. If you are unsure how to describe a lesson, tell the story first and return to that sentence later.<\/p>\n Use the words you would use in a conversation with someone you love. Read the draft aloud. If a sentence sounds unlike you, simplify it.<\/p>\n You can be candid without making the letter a list of regrets or instructions. Describe what helped you, while leaving room for your family members to make their own choices. Consider whether a difficult story includes private information about someone else and whether that detail is necessary.<\/p>\n If writing feels slow, speak your thoughts aloud and jot down the phrases you want to keep. A family member can help type your words if you are comfortable sharing them. Review the result so it still sounds like you and says only what you intend.<\/p>\n Add a date and keep a copy where you can find it again. You might share the letter now, read part of it during a quiet visit, or save it for a later occasion. Choose an approach that feels right for the relationship.<\/p>\n If you want someone to receive it later, tell a trusted person where it is and whom it is intended for. Keep account details and other sensitive financial information out of the letter. Its purpose is to preserve your message, so it does not need to contain the practical information used to manage your affairs.<\/p>\n Set aside a few minutes and finish this sentence: \u201cOne thing I want you to know is…\u201d Then explain why. You can stop after that paragraph.
